ABC Flashcards Forest German English: 8 simple game ideas
ABC flashcards are a great way for children to learn the alphabet in a playful way. With bilingual ABC cards, children can even expand their vocabulary to include a few English words.
We at LillyGo have had our own ABC flashcard set (16.90 EUR) produced. Since we love being outdoors and want to spend a lot of time in nature with our children, it was important to us that the ABC flashcards have a connection to the forest.
The illustrations are beautifully designed, the corners are rounded, and the cards are sufficiently sturdy. Furthermore, our ABC learning cards are FSC® certified: FSC MIX. FSC Mix signifies products that may contain materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and materials from controlled sources (Controlled Wood).

1. Free play
Why does there always have to be instructions? I gave the ABC cards to my almost 5-year-old daughter and simply let her explore. She looked at the cards carefully and asked lots of questions: about the letters, about the animals she didn't know, and about the letters she already knew. Afterwards, she got a pen and paper and tried to copy different letters. Of course, every child is different, but in our opinion, simply letting them explore is the best approach.
2. Get to know the forest inhabitants
Especially for younger children, the letters aren't the main focus of the ABC flashcards. The forest animals on the cards will certainly be more interesting. You can get to know the forest inhabitants together with your children. Sounds boring and short-lived? Just wait a bit before the next card is drawn. Children often start talking about what they associate with each animal.
3. Place the animals on the cards
They can be found in many children's rooms: Schleich animals. For those who prefer a more sustainable option, we recommend the wooden animals from Ostheimer or at least buying second-hand Schleich animals. If you have a whole box full of animals at home, you can spread the ABC cards with the illustrations on top on the floor and let the children match the corresponding animals. For older children, the cards can be placed with the letter facing up.

4. Guess the animals using their first letters
For example, which words begin with the letter A? Hold the card with the large letter up to the child, and then the fun guessing begins. Of course, not only animals are allowed, but basically any word the child can think of.
5. Put the alphabet in the correct order
Shuffle the ABC cards and scatter them across the table. Your child can then arrange the letters in the correct order. This game idea is suitable for older children.

6. Writing letters using the ABC flashcards (template).
The ABC cards are ideal for children learning to draw letters for the first time. Many children can already write their names before starting school and show an interest in the letters. If children enjoy learning or tracing more letters, then this ABC card set is perfect. Alternatively, children can simply trace the large letter on the front of the cards with their finger.
7. Learn English terms
We deliberately chose to print the English translation of the German word on our ABC cards to expand the possibilities for playing with them. My almost 5-year-old daughter is fascinated by English words because she hears her dad, who works from home most of the time, speaking English very often. Thanks to the English translation on each card, little ones learn the English names of animals in a playful way.
8. Engage in a dialogue with the child
We sometimes take the ABC card set with us on our hikes or walks. They're wonderful for starting a conversation with children outdoors (and indoors, of course). "What animals live in our forest?", "What do squirrels eat?", "Where do tadpoles live?". I'm sure the children will come up with many more questions. And what was the English word for ant again?
We hope that these 8 game ideas for ABC flashcards have inspired you to try them out with your child.
